In the past, latex condoms were off limits to men who were allergic to latex, since mere contact with the material may result in nasty, red, and itchy bumps and rashes. In severe cases, latex exposure causes severe allergic reactions that require medical attention.
Latex free condoms – a better alternative
Now, men can have safe sex even if they suffer from latex sensitivity with latex free condoms. These are usually made of polyurethane. Apart from the advantage of being safe for use by those with latex allergies, polyurethane condoms are thinner but are less constricting than their latex counterparts. They are also stronger and tend to resist deterioration better. Some even say that polyurethane condoms can enhance sensitivity during sexual intercourse. These condoms have been in use since the 1990s. Female condoms made of this material are also available in the market today.
Male condoms made of polyurethane are just as effective in preventing pregnancies as latex condoms, while female condoms are about 95% effective in doing the same. However, more research needs to be done when it comes to the effectiveness of polyurethane condoms in preventing STD transmissions.
They are also considerably more expensive than regular latex condoms. Most polyurethane condoms cost around $1.15 per piece.
